Programming

This course is designed for people new to programming with no prior experience. It introduces core ideas such as algorithmic thinking, data types, and the structure of programming languages, giving a clear practical foundation for further study.

It covers basic elements like control structures, variables and operators, and arrays and strings, explains simple I/O and debugging, and surveys popular languages (especially Java) to prepare you to choose and start learning a language.

  • Introduction: history of programming and programming languages
  • The concept of an algorithm, algorithm design, flowcharts and informal description methods
  • Overview of commonly used languages, with emphasis on Java and similar languages
  • Data types, operators and control statements
  • Arrays and strings and their processing
  • Input and output operations
Assumed knowledge:
Basic PC skills.
