Troubleshooting and Network Analysis Using a Sniffer (SNIF)

This course helps administrators and network analysts learn to diagnose common LAN problems across the stack, from physical links up to the application layer. Emphasis is on practical protocol knowledge, packet inspection and flow analysis.

Through labs you will use Wireshark and complementary tools to capture, filter and decode packets. Practical exercises focus on traffic generation, protocol correlation and hands-on labs to build repeatable troubleshooting skills for real-world network incidents.

  • IEEE 802.3 protocols (Ethernet family)
  • IEEE 802.2 protocols (LLC)
  • IEEE 802.11 protocols (Wi‑Fi)
  • IEEE 802.1 protocols (bridging, VLANs)
  • Exercise – simulate and resolve typical layer 1–2 issues on covered protocols
  • OSI layer 3 protocols – IPv4 and IPv6
  • Support protocols – ARP, ICMP, ICMPv6
  • Analysis of layer 3 protocols
  • Exercise – generate layer 3 traffic and analyze it
  • OSI layer 4 protocols – TCP, UDP, SCTP
  • Application protocols over UDP – SNMP, DHCP, DNS, TFTP
  • Application protocols over TCP – SMTP, IMAP, POP3, HTTP, FTP
  • NetBIOS over TCP and its use in Windows environments
  • Analysis of layer 4 and application layer protocols
  • Exercise – analyze captured communications and use advanced Wireshark features

Familiarity with MS Windows or Linux and basic networking concepts.
